字Kanji Nova

Privacy policy

Effective 11 October 2026 · Applies to the Kanji Nova app for Android and iOS, and to kanjinova.com

In short: Kanji Nova works without an account, and without one nothing about you leaves your phone. If you choose to sign in, we keep your email address and your study progress so it is safe and follows you to a new phone. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and you can delete everything at any time.

Who we are

Kanji Nova (“we”, “us”) makes the Kanji Nova app. For anything about this policy or your data, write to support@kanjinova.com.

Using the app without an account

Everything the app needs — kanji, words, stroke order, example sentences, practice questions and artwork — is built into it, so it works with no connection. What you do in the app is stored only on your phone, in the app’s own storage:

None of this is sent to us or anyone else. The lock screen kanji is a notification created by your phone itself. Reading a kanji aloud uses your phone’s built-in text-to-speech.

If you sign in

An account is optional. If you create one, we process:

WhatWhy
Your email addressTo send you a one-time sign-in code, and to identify your account. There is no password.
When your account was created, and when you last signed inTo run the account and keep you signed in.
Your study progress: JLPT level and new kanji per day; review history and when each kanji is next due; practice test scores and which questions you have seen; kanji you have hidden from the widgetSo your progress is backed up and the same on every phone you sign in on. It syncs automatically while you are signed in.

Your appearance, lock screen and widget settings are not synced; they stay on each phone. Only you can read your account’s data: every row is tied to your account and protected so that no other user can see it.

We use your data only to provide the app. We do not sell it, share it for advertising, or use it to build a profile of you.

Services that process data for us

Each processes data only on our instructions and under its own security commitments. These companies may process data in countries other than yours, including the United States.

The app is distributed by Google Play and the Apple App Store, which handle your download and any purchases under their own privacy policies.

What we do not do

Permissions

The app asks for permission to show notifications only if you turn on the lock screen kanji. On Android it may also ask to schedule exact alarms, so the kanji changes on time, and it notices when your phone restarts so the lock screen kanji comes back afterwards.

How long we keep it

Account data and synced progress are kept for as long as you have an account. Data on your phone stays until you delete it or uninstall the app. If you email us, we keep the conversation only as long as we need it to help you.

Deleting your data

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it, and you can object to how we use it. Write to support@kanjinova.com from the email address on your account and we will reply within 30 days. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Security

Everything sent between the app and our services is encrypted in transit. Sign-in uses one-time codes, so there is no password to leak.

Children

Kanji Nova is a study app for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13; if you believe a child has created an account, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes

If we change what we collect — for example when subscriptions are added — we will update this policy and its effective date before the change reaches the app, and tell you in the app when the change matters to you.
