Common questions
How do I add the widget?
Android: in the app, tap You → Add widget to home screen, or long-press an empty spot on your home screen, choose Widgets, find Kanji Nova and drag it out. Press and hold it to resize.
iPhone: touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen until the apps jiggle, tap Edit or +, search for Kanji Nova, choose a size and tap Add Widget.
How do I see a kanji on my lock screen?
Android: turn on You → Kanji on lock screen and allow notifications. The kanji shows as a silent notification and changes on the schedule you choose.
iPhone: touch and hold your lock screen, tap Customise, then Lock Screen, tap the area under the clock and add Kanji Nova.
The widget isn’t changing, or looks out of date.
Open the app once: that tops up the list of upcoming kanji and redraws the widget. Some Android phones stop apps working in the background to save battery; allowing Kanji Nova to run in the background, and turning on You → On-time changes, keeps it moving.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything works without one. An account backs up your progress and keeps it the same on every phone you sign in on.
My sign-in code hasn’t arrived.
Check your spam or junk folder for an email from Kanji Nova, and that the address you typed is right. You can ask for a new code after 60 seconds. Codes only work for a limited time, so use the newest one.
How does syncing work?
While you are signed in, your progress syncs automatically: when you open the app, and shortly after you study. It works offline and catches up when you are back online. Progress you made before signing in is added to your account the first time you sign in. You can see when it last synced, and sync by hand, under You → Account.
How do I delete my data or my account?
See Delete your account, or the deleting section of our privacy policy.
Are the practice tests real JLPT papers?
No. They are written for Kanji Nova in the JLPT’s format, to help you prepare. Kanji Nova is not affiliated with the Japan Foundation or JEES, who run the JLPT.
